furniture symbol insertion point from a fixed datum

I have been asked to do something with symbols that a colleague only knows how to in AUTOCAD, here is what they said "when inserted into the drawing it asks you for a dimension away from the floor or the wall . I used to that in Autocad and not have to redraw the Blocks every time."
