To all of you PC users who have upgraded to Windows 7, are any of you experiencing any problems or errors using VW with it?  More specifically, is anyone using VW 2010 and Windows 7?

I have a brand new fast computer. In addition to a few other errors for reasons which I am still pursuing, I am getting errors in the Event Viewer linked to Adobe AIR. I have reviewed VW Knowledgebase and their recommendations are already up to date on my machine. My machine is not running consistently well and it is causing me a lot of grief. I had no problems with XP.

Hi Lee

Yep...I can't even load VW on to Win7..says there are missing DLLs. I got the missing DLLs off the net, put them in the appropriate place and still no joy. I'm running a 64bit version so that may be the issue. I have since found out that VW actually runs slower on the 64bit platform...sheesh!!!! Why?????. I don't have the time to sort this out with Nems at the moment so I've gone back to Vista...will try again next year, by then Nems might have caught up with the technology. To be fair though, other people seem to be running on Win764 without a problem...maybe I'm just stupid LOL

Cheers

Mike,
Thanks, but sorry that you too are having problems. Yours are far worse than mine. I have things up and running, but there's something not right, but it is hard to explain. I get too many occasional messages where "VW has stopped working...", or something like that from Explorer, Excel and Outlook. I am also getting errors in the event viewer from both Adobe AIR (VW) and from Adobe Acrobat that occur at the same time in the middle of the night each day. I'm frustated because XP was a work horse with an error extremely rare. I went to Windows 7 to allow the 64 bit technology to have access to more RAM, but I'm not seeing a tremendous change in speed. If anything it is slower and the cursor is often spinning in wait mode. Since I can't pin point the problem and neither can Dell, I don't know what to do.

Hi Lee

I wish I had taken the time to explore Win7 64bit a bit more thoroughly, as like you, I wanted the speed increase...who wouldn't? Nems will catch up, but in the mean time all my ArchiCAD friends are laughing at me. I had a similar experience when I went to dual core only to find that neither VW or Renderworks was utilizing the second core.

Getting back to your thing, I recently read that 90% of Windows problems either are caused by the graphics or audio driver. Food for thought. I actually had an horrendous problem with an ATI card once a few years bck. Although it was an expensive one it just hated VW. After talking to the support guys at Nems I decided to just bite the bullet and buy a new card...bingo, the problem vanished. The ATI card was listed on Nems preferred cards list but still with so many different combinations of PC hardware available it must be hard to make a diffinitve list of all combinations. I swapped to N'vidia. My advice is to see if you can beg borrow or steal a different Video card for test purposes. It might pay to kill the audio driver too while you're at it. Worth a try?

Cheers

Mike,

After a long time testing various design software I plumped for Architect 2010 (got the renderworks plug-in as well), which initially worked fantastically. I too am running a PC with windows 7 (64 bit) - it is a brand new dual core PC (twin 3.0G) with 4MB RAM and a NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT - all as recommended by Nem. The problem I am now having is that Vectorworks seems to be running out of memory even every time it is booted up, which is basically costing me time and money, as I am unable to produce output. I changed over to Vectorworks as I started my own practice a year ago and had to make a decision on how I wanted to "sell my wares" and Vectorworks looked on paper to be the best. Have I made a big mistake??

By the way, I have had the whole system cleaned out by my IT bloke who has said there is nothing wrong with my PC, and that it is running fine.

Cheers,

Kevin.
Mike,

This is my question (not whether to use VW...no question). But are my problems related to VW with Windows 7 or is there some other problem? Should I switch back to Windows XP (VW 2009 worked very well in that environment) or is there a way to fix this? I have a brand new PC with dual core (twin 2.40 Ghz) with 4MB RAM and a NVIDIA Quattro FX 580. Now that I think about it, it seems I am either running out of memory or there is not enough memory.

Simple tasks like updating the viewports of simple model take too long in my opinion.

Can anyone else with experience or from VW respond to these issues? I may post or repost this link on the VW LinkedIn site to get more feedback. In fact see http://bit.ly/9NGm3p. Hopefully we can all generate some responses to help all of our issues.

Thanks,
Lee
Sorry, the first part of my last comment was a reply back to Kevin.
Lee,

I agree with you totally. there is no question that VW is by far the best piece of software on the market - both for ease of use and cost, it is just that I am getting extremely frustrated with the slowing down of the system - and not being able to find a way of speeding it back up to the speed it was when I first installed VW.

Kevin
Lee,

Have you upgraded to the latest Video drivers? If not, Nvidia last released was 03/19/2010 see link for W7 64 Bit: http://www.nvidia.com/object/Quadro_win7_winvista_64bit_197.03_whql...
Here a Kbase article to how to upgrade graphic drivers:

I hope this helps.

Juan,

I did upgrade my video card driver per your recommendation, thanks. I can't say if it made any difference, yet. I did notice yesterday that when I toggled between two VW files, that the screen within the VW browser turned black for a part of a second. Then it redrew to the other file. Today when I do the same thing, the screen "bounces" slightly as it redraws. I'm puzzled.

I can't pinpoint what my issue is, but I am not seeing any speed difference either with a new computer, Windows 7 and VW 2010. I expected to see faster renders and a noticable difference when I spend a lot of money to upgrade my software and computer. I'm puzzled.

Thanks for your help,
Lee
Whilst this might not be the solution for everone. I got so annoyed I reinstalled vectorwork - from the box, and it seemd to work perfectly. Funny thing was that when the quicktime went to do its first update (as it does automatically) from the version distributed with VW2010 (Version 7.6.2) the same problem with memory happened again. I uninstalled quicktime and reinstalled Version 7.6.2 and VW works perfectly again. I have now switched off the quicktime updater and I will not be letting it update.

IS THERE A PROBLEM WITH QUICKTIME - Has anyone else come across this??

Kevin.
Lee,

If uninstalling the latest version of QT and reinstalling the one from the VW DVD installer worked for Kevin certainly this is a good option, however I have experienced better results uninstalling VW and QT from the program files (x86) and reinstalling under regular program files (32 bit). Let me know.

Juan,

In the "My Computer" folder there is a folder for Program Files and Program Files (x86). I have 64 bit Windows 7. Should I reinstall it under the folder "Program Files"?
