I am having problems with my pc, and I may need to have a new one soon. This will come with Windows 7 (now running on XP). My concern is that my VW2008 will not run on it. Will i be forced to upgrade to 2011 (I don't want to spend if I don't have to)?

Has anyone any comments/advice on this issue?

I can't speak from experience on this issue, but in theory, Windows 7 has the ability to run programs in different modes that emulate previous versions of the Windows platform.  I am running Adobe Creative Suite 3, which is from a similar time frame, and it runs in a "Windows XP mode" with no issues or hiccups.

If I had to guess, I'd say you won't have any issues.

Thanks Jim,

I was sent this link by someone in the UK distributors of VW:

Dear Huw

I assume the question relates to compatibility, rather than functionality?

Arguably, upgrading to VW2011 (or VW2012 when it comes out) will pay for itself in increased functionality within a few months (depending on which module you have), and leave you in a better position for future OS updates.

I would always recommend trying to keep your primary application up-to-date.  Not doing so is almost always a false economy.

Nemetschek have made it a lot easier to keep up-to-date with VSS.

Thanks for your reply
I wish I had the money to upgrade my VW.  However:  I bought a Windows 7 Professional laptop this February.  I think I installed VW 2008 from my original disk and it has been working very nicely for me.  So my experience is that you'll be okay with W7 and VW2008.
Presumably then, according to the info I've had, yours is the 32-bit version of W7. I don't know under what circumstances one would need to have a 64-bit version installed - I'm not savvy enough. If I can manage all my other applications with 32-bit, then I will not need to upgrade my VW.
I think you need to talk to someone who knows about the 64-bit version...  I am running the 64-bit version, and it somehow seems to know what programs run in 32-bit and runs them appropriately.  When I look into my system folders, it has a separate folder for programs that run in 32-bit versus 64-bit, and when I'm installing a program that's older, it gives me an option to run it in compatibility mode, at which point you select what version of windows your software works in.  I don't know how it works, and I can't promise that it will work with VW2008, but I think you need to talk to someone from Microsoft and find out more about that feature of windows 7.
Thanks for that. Very interesting

I am running VW 2011 on Windows 7-64 bit. After fooling with it for a year, I finally got it tweaked to work ok, but I don't find it very fast for the power I have in my computer. I also have a 24" monitor where I changed the video settings to enlarge the font size since it's soooo small (a Windows problem). That has/is causing me several video/redraw problems.

I am a big VW fan, but I don't see the speed yet especially when using a 3d model/BIM model. I hope it keeps getting better and being a less memory hog. It seems VW runs better on cheaper video cards than the expensive fast one I have. I haven't been doing much 3d or rendering lately, partially due to past frustration over rendering time. I am not convinced that it is truly Windows 7 compatible, or at least programmed to run in 64 bit.

However, I am not switching. I am committed to VW...for some reason. I miss the days of VW12.5 on Windows XP.

Interseting to hear that. Thanks
