try making up the detail and saving to you detail file then when you start a new drawing you can link into it, I do this in any office I go to and we all have access to the same details.
How about creating symbols of each detail and putting them in a main detail symbol file thus you can import any detail in any file through the resource brouwser. Anyone can load this library file. Other advantages are that each variation of similar details can be created from existing ones and saved as new ones, all details can be edited centrally in the main symbol file and upgrading to new versions of VW also only have to be done in the main symbol file?
I wrote a short manual called Creating Construction Details, $21.50US, that might help. you can get this from

I use 2 methods. 1) I have several files where I store standard details and symbols which I then reference as "Favorites" in my Resource Browser, When I complete a project, I transfer critical symbols and details from the Project to the appropriate standard details file(s). 2) I store my own Hatches, Textures, Reports, etc. in the User appropriate "Defaults" Library folders. This allows easy access to all of my personal "standards" in a lot of the dialog boxes while not burdening the overall file size for the Project.

I have only just begun experimenting with this procedure so I would be happy to hear of other suggestions.

My method is very similar to Sam's method. I have master files that have standard details as well as files that have "master symbols" accessed through the favorites folder in the Resources Browser. Now that VW is a BIM based program (as opposed to when I started creating standards with MiniCAD), many of the symbols are no longer needed.

Time and a lot of projects are the keys to generating a good library. I have looked at purchasing 3rd party add ons for details, but I find my approch differs too much from others I'd be concerned that I would just be editing the purchased details too much, thus losing the savings.

However, if there could be a way to "share" details in a forum where we agree to take responsibility for the details once we use them on our own projects. If we borrowed as many details as we lent, perhaps we wouldn't feel the need to "profit" from them.
